“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”
- John Muir, father of the National Parks, naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist
Movement is one of the best ways to get ideas flowing. Whether you are stuck, overwhelmed, or even overflowing with possibilities, taking a walk can get the ideas flowing as well as help you zero in on what is most important. Walking is all about movement, forward movement to be exact. The physical act of moving forward creates a cerebral connection with concepts including “movement”, “forward progress”, “energy”, “momentum”, and many other action-oriented verbs. Whether you start your day with a walk or can get up in the middle of the day to take a break, you can gain tremendous benefits, physically and mentally. You can clear your head. You can cool off. You can compose yourself. You can seek guidance from God, the universe, or wherever you draw your strength.
Further, you can search for inspiration within nature. The natural world has infinite growth, new starts, rebirths, synergies, diversity, colors, movement, … all of the things / attributes that you are likely looking for to help solve your problem(s) and challenge(s). So, look around you – the proverbial stop and smell the roses – and find your inspiration in the world around you.
Ideally, a walk outside allows you to combine the best of the best by experiencing nature, getting your vitamin D from the sun, and exercising. However, some days are busier than others and you might not be able to take time away from your desk. If that is the case, you can take a walk around the building – take a few laps around the halls, climb a few staircases. If you are really pinched for time or walking is not possible, then simply look out the window or even at a picture of the great outdoors. With the right mindset, you can achieve the same benefits.
“An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.”
- Henry David Thoreau, American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher
