“The quieter you become the more you can hear.”
- Ram Dass, American spiritual teacher, psychologist, author
Certainly, the definition of the word “wait” is all about patience and delaying action.
Taking this further, WAIT is a great acronym and memory jogger for “Why am I talking?”
To be present with your team, colleagues, friends, and family, try reminding yourself to WAIT. Allow others to express their thoughts. Even if you need to wait it out through an uncomfortable period of silence, wait until someone else steps forward and talks. Once everyone else has had their say, then of course, feel free to share your perspective.
To remind yourself of this technique, you can write “WAIT” on a notecard placed on your desk, at the top of your notebook, or on a stickie attached to your monitor – wherever you can easily glance at it.
WAIT is also a great opportunity to practice your breathing. Use the four letters as a reminder to take four mindful breaths. Breathing helps calm your mind, bring you to a state of presence, and prepare you for a thoughtful engagement.
“Patience is a virtue.”
- William Langland, poet
